Comment-to-DM automation on Instagram: how it works and when to use it
By the Elvz team ·
You have seen posts that say "comment GLOW and I’ll send you the link". That is a comment-to-DM automation. Done well, it turns attention into conversations; done badly, it feels spammy.
How it works
- You choose a keyword for a post or reel
- When someone comments that keyword, an automatic public reply confirms a DM is on its way
- A direct message is sent with the link, offer or answer
- Clicks and results are tracked so you know if it worked
When it helps
Product launches, pre-orders, free guides and limited offers. Anything where people want a link and Instagram does not allow clickable links in captions.
How to keep it human
- Write the DM in your brand voice, not a template
- Make the keyword relevant to the post
- Reply to follow-up questions personally
- Do not run the same automation on every post
Doing it with Elvz
Tell Juno "when someone comments GLOW on the reel, DM them the pre-order link". Echo writes the reply and DM in your voice, runs the automation through the official API and Sage tracks clicks and pre-orders.
